Abstract

This study aims to explore the influence of student motivation in the implementation of alternative assessment on the academic performance of foundation students at a Malaysian public university. Alternative assessments, which include assignments, presentations, portfolios, and self-reflection, are viewed as effective approaches to enhance students’ engagement in learning, particularly when student motivation is considered. This quantitative study employed a survey design involving 285 foundations students from various academic programs. A self-developed questionnaire based on the Self-Determination Theory was used to measure students’ motivation and their academic performance within the context of alternative assessments. The findings indicate a positive and statistically significant relationship between student motivation and academic performance (r = 0.443, p<0.001). Regression analysis further revealed that motivation in alternative assessment implementation could predict 30.5% of the variance in student performance (R2 = 0.305). The implications of the study suggest that authentic and reflective assessment approaches have the potential to enhance students’ motivation and contribute to improve academic performance in their holistic manner.
